Ever wondered why lots of qualified lawyers or doctors are musicians or comedians after spending several years in University?
A year after graduating from university, spending 3 years studying Fashion Marketing and Branding (Ignore the word ‘fashion’, its was basically Business Development) which I loved studying and enjoyed every bits of it, got me thinking of how I got myself in this 9 to 5 Marketing Job I completely ‘Hate‘ (Marketing here is slightly better than in Nigerian but I still hate it).
Listen, I am not saying everyone practising what they studied hate their jobs but I am pretty sure a large amount of ‘Creative people‘ involve in either fashion, beauty, blogging, YouTube or entertainment dislike the 9 to 5 lifestyle.
Oh, you think everybody hates 9 to 5? Well, you would be surprised some people actually love this lifestyle. They think it’s structured and at least they are sure of having a stable income unlike most creative people bossing it off out there.
Why You Seriously Need To Start Building Your Own Business As A Creative Person!
Obviously, everybody knows what you studied in class is different from the real-life workspace but that’s not the problem. Take a minute and think deeply? :”Why would anyone spend 6 years studying Law to become a full-time artist or YouTuber?“
Boredom! Yes, If you have a passion for fashion, beauty or entertainment. Most jobs give limited space to be creative. You will get bored to the extent of questioning your whole educational years. I am not saying going to University most especially isn’t worth it because it surely is. But, you need to start building your own business on the side as early as possible because somehow passion always finds a way to overpower your qualifications in a long run.
Either you are still a student or already working, you need to start investing in your passion. It is NEVER too late. Stop thinking of it as just a hobby but how to turn your passion into a business. If you are really good at what you do and have a strong belief in it, why not make a living out of it?
Know what your strengths are and use them to build something major!
Don’t wait until the stress of waking up every-day at 4 AM to beat Lagos traffic for that 8 AM start and 10 PM finish knock you out!
